The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

The story of the desperate struggle of California's earliest Japanese settlers against drought and strife in the San Joaquin Valley makes a stirring addition to the Land of the Free books. In one group of those staunch pioneers was sixteen-year-old Tarosan, who came to California in the early 1900's. Through Taro's life and adventures an exciting and inspiring story of one of the most courageous battles in history, a battle against the hostile soil, comes vividly to life.

Just as important in the struggle was Taro's rebellion against Japanese tradition and his firm resolution to learn the ways and language of his new country.

Because of the flourishing farmland of present-day, California owes much of its growth and prosperity to these brave forerunners of the Nisei, this tale is not only thrilling reading, but vital to a full understanding and appreciation of the development of America.
