Jane can’t talk. The rest of the Catwings have no idea why, but ever since she was rescued from a wrecked building, she hasn’t uttered a word. One day, Jane comes back to the barn with another kitten walking behind her. This new kitten is named Alexander, who had left his home to explore the world. The children who care for the Catwings are delighted with Alexander, and he stays with at the farm as a pet to the children’s mother.

But that’s not all Alexander does. He becomes good friends with Jane, but is sad that she can’t talk. Determined to solve her problem, Alexander sits on Jane’s tail till she tells him what is wrong. Though Jane resists, Alexander doesn’t give up. Jane eventually reveals that when she was trapped in the crumbling building, there were rats that frightened her so badly that she could no longer speak. But with Alexander there to comfort her, Jane overcomes her fears, and rejoices with the rest of the Catwings over her cure.
