Tenar is old and widowed when the child Therru comes into her care. Long gone are her days as a high priestess, gone are her days of escape and daring adventure, gone are the people she's loved. Her new charge has, like Tenar, come out of extreme darkness without an identity and without any clear understanding of herself. When Ged returns to the island Tenar now lives on, he finally settles down with her and together they care for Therru, loving her and each other. But when a terrible wizard threatens their peace, it is up to Ged and Tenar to help Therru find her own identity, an identity much deeper than any of them could have guessed.
