When the Earl of Locksley rode off to the Crusades with Richard the Lionheart, he left his young son Robin as a ward of the Sheriff of Nottingham. Robin frequently tried the patience of his guardian with his daring escapades, but on the eve of his twenty-first birthday, when he was about to inherit rich lands and manors, he found himself in very serious trouble. At a shooting match at Nottingham, Robin was implicated in an attempt on the life of Prince John, Regent of England and brother to the King. Declared an outlaw, he fled into the depths of Sherwood Forest and took the name of Robin Hood.

Antonia Fraser uses all her considerable skills as a storyteller to bring to life the adventures of Robin Hood, as he set out from his forest hiding-place to rob the rich to feed the poor. She introduces his band of Merry Men: Will Scarlett, Alan-a-Dale, Little John, Friar Tuck and Much the Miller's son, and Robin's lady love, fair Marian of Whitby. We also meet his arch-enemies, Prince John, the Sheriff of Nottingham, the dastardly Oswald Montdragon and, above all, the beautiful but scheming Black Barbara, united in their determination to crush Robin and his supporters before the return to England of King Richard and true justice.

These much loved tales of daring, fellowship and treachery are vividly illustrated by the splendid drawings of Victor Ambrus.
