In 1838, W. S. Johnson published an English Romance called Robin Hood and Little John by the younger Pierce Egan. Alexandre Dumas, better known for his Three Musketeers and Count of Monte Cristo, adapted this volume and it was published after his death in 1870 in two volumes titled A Prince of Thieves (Le Prince des voleurs, 1872) and Robin Hood the Outlaw (Robin Hood le proscrit, 1873). These were translated back into English by A.R. Allinson and published as Robin Hood: The Outlaw by Methuen in 1904. Sometime after that, an unknown editor adapted the story and the Italian artist Benvenuti applied his hand to illustrating it, coming up with a stunning oversized picture book which was published in 1961. This one is hard to find, and generally quite expensive in good shape. Benvenuti also illustrated the text by Howard Pyle in a version published by Golden Books a year later, in 1962. Much of the art in the two volumes is the same, but each edition includes unique illustrations.
