Margery Sharp is a famous novelist whose books have sold over three million copies already. Success came at one to her in 1937 with The Nutmeg Tree; other popular books includes Britannia Mews, Cluny Brown, The Foolish Gentlewoman, The Tigress on the Hearth and a recent Club choice, The Gypsy in the Parlour. Dolores is left with only a few pounds and a young niece, Martha. She is reduced to taking as a lodger the mean and calculating Mr. Phillips, who is determined to marry her in the false belief that she owns the house. Thus develops an intriguing situation around which a host of fascinating characters revolve. The ending to this delightful novel is as unexpected as it is satisfying—lively, richly human and light-hearted, it will amuse and entertain every reader.
