The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

Benny never thought his hobby would get him into trouble. He collected locks and keys and the first one to get angry with him for fixing a lock in school was his teacher. When he added a mysterious key to his collection, other things began to happen. His room was ransacked and Mrs. Sallee, a neighbor, was knocked unconscious and taken to the hospital. The mayor was suspicious because some bonds were missing, as well as a key. With a thief called Jaunty Joe after him, Benny and his friend, Emily, looked for the Place where the old key would fit. When they found it, they finally solved the town mystery.

About the Author:

JEAN BOTHWELL was born in Nebraska but spent a number of years in India as a teacher. Many of her books have the background of this exotic Asian land. Miss Bothwell had always wanted to write and began to do so while living in India. Her first book appeared after her return to the United States, and since then she has had more than thirty books published, some about India, some about America. The Thirteenth Stone won first prize in the Herald Tribune Spring Book Festival in 1946. Search for a Golden Bird is a book you will like, too.

About the Illustrator:

LEONARD SHORTALL was born in Seattle and went to the University of Washington. He settled in the East, and, with his wife and three children, now lives in Connecticut. He has done a good deal of advertising art, and has been a magazine illustrator. He illustrated many successful books for boys and girls.
