Long ago in the lovely French city of Avignon there lived a sweet and pretty little mule. She belonged to the ruler of the city, good Pope Boniface, and she was loved by all. The Pope's mule led a most happy life–until suddenly she became the focus of greedy Tistet Vedene's scheme for getting rich. For seven long years the crafty Tistet made the little mule miserable; but in the end, as John Lawrence's pictures graphically show, the mule had her just revenge, all the sweeter for being so long delayed.
This hilarious tale is taken from Alphonse Daudet's classic collection Lettres de mon moulin, and has been a beloved favorite of generations of French children.
