In this story of the English Civil War, Henty manages to cover the struggle between the Cavaliers and the Roundheads. This two-heroed tale is about Harry Furness, a Cavalier, and Herbert Rippinghall, a Roundhead. How will these two young lads remain true to their conscience and still remain friends in a turbulent, troubled time? The reader will follow the adventures in Scotland, experience the execution of Charles I, learn of the fighting in Ireland, participate in Charles II's attempt to reclaim the throne, join in on this monarch's flight from the country and his life overseas before he finally is restored to the throne.
