Joseph Had a Little Overcoat

Joseph Had a Little Overcoat

by Simms Taback
Publisher: Viking Press
Hardcover, 36 pages
Price: $17.99

Joseph had a little overcoat. It was old and worn. But that won't stop Joseph. He's good at making something new out of something old, and when he has nothing at all left he can make something out of that too.

The story of thrifty Jewish farmer Joseph and his worn overcoat has entertained children for over a decade, and it's not hard to see why. There's the thrill of seeing what Joseph makes next and trying to guess through the die-cut shapes. But perhaps the best parts of the book are the little details that Simms Taback includes in the background. Using collage he incorporates photographs of people, vegetables, book covers, tea cups, portraits and newspapers.

There are stories going on behind the actual story, told through newspaper headlines, and morals sprinkled throughout in cross-stitched frames. Joseph may have created something from nothing, but Simms Taback takes a whole lot of somethings and turns it into one fun book.

Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
