The king's daughter is beautiful, but proud and haughty. She pokes fun at all her suitors, which angers the king, who vows that she must marry the first beggar who comes to the door.
This is accompanied by a parallel story illustrated by Maurice Sendak in which two children become the principal actors in a theatrical production of the story.
