Siegfried forsakes Brünnhilde in order that he may gain fame and glory in the world. But soon he falls a victim to an infamous plot to rob him of his ring. First tricked into betraying Brünnhilde, Siegfried is finally slain and Brünnhilde, mounting her steed, rides into the flames of his funeral pyre and is consumed. The Rhine overflows, darkness spreads over the world and the end of the gods is at hand.
