Dr. Zim, perhaps the most widely recognized science writer for children in the elementary grades today, has explored many subjects for his readers. Now he turns to marine science for the latest addition to his long list of highly recommended books. Of all the creatures of the sea, sharks seem to be the most feared, and the story of what we know about them is a fascinating one indeed.
As introduction, this book gives a brief description of the evolution of sharks, and then discusses their physical characteristics and breeding habits, as well as the uses man has found for them. Also included is a section in which 20 of the 250 shark species are identified by picture and caption. Each entry can be located quickly by using the index on the last page. In conclusion, Dr. Zim tells of man's encounters with sharks and makes clear that they should always be treated with respect.
This lively and informative text is illustrated on almost every page, and no youngster interested in the underwater world should miss it.
