Herbert S. Zim

Herbert S. Zim was born in 1909 in New York City, but most of his childhood was spent in Southern California He finished his education in New York and holds B.S., M.A., and Ph. D. degrees from Columbia University.

Dr. Zim has spent over thirty years teaching in the fields of science and science education. He taught at the Ethical Culture Schools in New York, where he became head of the science department. Later he served as science consultant for other schools and did research in science education under a grant from the General Education Board. He has served on national committees and is active in scientific and educational organizations. At one time he worked with the pre-induction training program of the War Department and he has been educational consultant for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. In 1947 Dr. Zim became the editor of the Golden Nature Guides and also wrote some of them.

In 1967 he received the honorary degree of Doctor of Science from Beloit College, Wisconsin, and has held the post of Professor of Science Education at the University of Illinois.

His first wife, Sonia Bleeker, wrote a series of books on Native Americans.
