Randy Alcorn's monumental ProLife Answers to ProChoice Arguments is exactly what the title claims. Taking all the usual (and a few surprising) arguments in favor of abortion, Alcorn systematically dismantles each one using logic, scientific evidence, and extensively researched statistics in a literal question/response format. While definitely written from a Christian perspective, the book is not merely an espousal of typical Christian rhetoric concerning abortion—the answers provided are prolife in a broader humanitarian sense and thus more difficult for non-believers to refute.

Prochoice problems presented range from the non-humanity of fetuses to ethical questions of abortion in the case of rape or incest; for each problem, however, there are multiple prolife responses offered, all of them clearly explained and profusely documented and referenced. This is a reference work rather than a cohesive text, with questions and answers grouped according to kind, and appendices including resources for mothers who have had abortions, Biblical passages which shed light on the issue, a brief history of abortion and the Church's historical position, information about the birth control pill, a Bible study for group discussion, a Biblical defense of the sanctity of life, and much more.

One of the most striking elements of this book is the series of appeals sandwiched between the question and answer portion and the appendices—appeals to women considering an abortion, appeals to the media, appeals to physicians, appeals to prolife and prochoice Christians, appeals to legislators and to the Church. Each appeal asks those addressed to examine their position, to reconsider if necessary, and for the rest to engage the struggle against the most deadly holocaust of modern times with whatever means possible. An important book for prolifers, this is also an excellent volume to give away to those who support abortion and those whose apathy has rendered them "neutral."

Review by C. Hollis Crossman
C. Hollis Crossman used to be a child. Now he is a husband and father, teaches adult Sunday school in his Presbyterian congregation, and likes weird stuff. He might be a mythical creature, but he's definitely not a centaur. Read more of his reviews here.
