The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent condition, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

The cowboy life as seen in motion pictures and on TV doesn't always reflect the way things really were.  Even back when the cowboy business was at its height, Western magazines and dime novels tended to exaggerate and make the life seem more glamorous and exciting than it really was.

These stories caught the imagination of a number of farmers, factory workers, and shopkeepers who found their lives dull by comparison and set out with high hopes to seek a new life. By and large, however, the cowboy worked at a monotonous and demanding job. He spent endless hours in the saddle, dealt with violent and uncooperative horses and cowbrutes, and often as not slept on the ground for weeks at a time in fair weather or foul.

Glen Rounds offers a look at some of the detail of a cowboy's dress, his tools, what he  did on a cattle drive, at roundup time, in town, and during the winter — an entertaining and informative view of what it was really like to work at the cowboy trade.
