A young boy takes a solitary train trip. A group of commuters wait for a train that doesn't come. Two children must decide if their parents have gone crazy. A thief steals a herd of Holstein cows. Do these events happen at the same time? Are they connected? You'll have to decide, and it may take several readings to figure it out.

David Macaulay is best known for his detailed books about buildings, but his Caldecott medal win came from this crazy, confusing, creative picture book. Four stories are told side-by-side in panels across the pages in four different art styles. This mixed-up, non-linear approach to storytelling encourages children to pay attention. We love books that both entertain and provoke thought. In the hands of the talented David Macaulay, this book does exactly that.

Review by Lauren Shearer
Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
