In this ballad, Myra Cohn Livingston narrates the story of Lincoln's life, from his childhood in Kentucky to his assassination on April 14, 1865. He believed in liberty and justice for all, fought to end slavery, and hoped the nation would heal after the Civil War. Mrs. Livingston uses several quotes, including one from the Gettysburg Address: "Fervently do we pray/That this mighty scourge of war/May speedily pass away."
