White Snow, Bright Snow

White Snow, Bright Snow

by Alvin Tresselt, Roger Duvoisin (Illustrator)
Trade Paperback, 32 pages
Price: $7.99

The bright snow is coming. The postman knows it, the farmer can tell, the policeman is waiting for it, the housewife can feel it. They get out their snow shovels, rubber boots, and cough mixtures in preparation. But the children wait expectantly, for when the snow comes then it's time to play.

White Snow, Bright Snow is just one of the many Caldecott winners about or prominently featuring snow. The story is evocative, and the poetic nature of the text makes for a great read-aloud. Duvoisin's bold illustrations are fun to look at. Set against a grey backdrop with accents of red and yellow, they're very simply drawn in the four-color-palette typical of the 1940's.

Like many older picture books the story is on the longer side, and may fail to hold the interest of some children. Not focusing on action, it instead tries to evoke the feeling of the first snow. Honestly, this was done with far fewer words and to greater effect in The Snowy Day, but that's not to say this book doesn't succeed. It's a gentle picture of a different era and the universal wonder of a first snowfall.

Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
