The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

From the dust jacket:

"We hunt the high ground and the far places, and then we come down the mountain to show the trail to others." Tillahaw, the Cherokee scout, tells his young son Atsee that this is what makes them different from the "pale" Cherokee who have adopted too many of the white man's ways.

It is Atsee's dream to follow in his father's footsteps and become a great scout. After his father is killed, Atsee becomes even more determined to fulfill his ambition.

But the world is changing and the Cherokee nation can no longer live by the old traditions and hope to survive. Reluctantly, for it is hard to relinquish a dream, Atsee begins to see that new ways are needed to show the trail to others.

Atsee resolves to put aside the bow and arrows, the tools of his father, and learn the white man's language. He decides that his people will not find their way out of the wilderness by conquering new mountains but by replacing ignorance and illiteracy with the ability to read, and write, and learn. By guiding his people toward these horizons he feels he will truly show the trail to others.
