The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

A Norwegian orphan girl stows away on a small sailing vessel on a hazardous journey across the Atlantic in 1825.

When the idea of escape first occurred to Margit, she rejected it as fantastic. How could an orphan hope to leave the life of rigid discipline and drudgery in Norway, much less go to America? But the idea grew and a plan took shape in Margit's mind, leading her to risk the dangers of becoming a stowaway aboard the Restoration, on its hazardous voyage across the Atlantic in 1825.

Seen through the eyes of this young girl, the migration of a small group of Norwegian dissenters, leaving their native land to escape religious persecution, becomes a vivid saga of hardship, despair, inspiring courage and triumphant success.

Based on accurate historical fact, this was the first permanent Norwegian settlement in this country. But without the faith and ideals of young people like Margit, Kendall Colony could never have become a reality.

Borghald Dahl, writer, teacher, lecturer, and woman of indomitable courage, is known and admired in every part of the country and particularly in the Middle West. Born in Minneapolis of Norwegina parents, her Scandinavian background is strongly evident in her books.
