The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent condition, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

When The Story of the Great Lakes was first published, The Horn Book said: "This large, flat picture book introduces a five- to nine-year-old to regional history and geography. From the time of the Indians, to the opening of the Soo Canal, from yellow birch canoes and La Salle's vessel, The Griffin, to the loading of grain ships and the gallant work of the Coast Guard, the big colored pictures dramatize life on the Great Lakes for American children."

The beautiful Great Lakes section has always played a vital part in American and Canadian history. Here is a lively and entertaining account not only of the natural beauties of this region but also of its important role in the steel and iron industry of America as one of the greatest shipbuilding districts in the world.

Once again Mr. DeWitt's bright lithographs have caught they very breath and spirit of the country he portrays. There are twenty full-page pictures in six colors and many black-and-white drawings.
