Introduction
John F. Kennedy had a special appeal to the youth of America. His outlook of optimism and courage was understood by young America, and indeed, by youth throughout the world. The spirit exemplified by President Kennedy was accepted not only by young people but by many older citizens that gave vigor and purpose to America, and to other nations, in a time of as well, who saw in him and in his hopes for "the New Frontier" a challenge transition.
The Story of John F. Kennedy tells a story that will in a few years become a legend. But in 1964, it recalls vividly events that are still a part of the living memory of all. For John F. Kennedy walks in our thoughts today even though his life and works are now history.
This is a time when we are struggling to guarantee that persons of all classes, creeds, and races may move into positions of economic and political leadership; to insure that the freedoms and rights of all responsible people are nurtured as national assets; and to give every individual a chance to achieve his fullest potential. These hopes, these goals were advanced immeasurably by the bold leadership of President Kennedy in guiding our nation toward greater political, economic, educational, and cultural opportunities.
The Story of John F. Kennedy, in relating his boyhood and youth, his schooling, his military and political service before becoming President, and his family life, makes clear why he can so aptly be described as "the first statesman of the Space Age, symbol of hope for securing peace in a troubled world, and the champion of equal rights for all citizens." It is a fitting memorial to the life and contributions of our recently martyred president.
