When Sophie Barton discovered a mysterious figure crouching outside the ranch house window one night, she wasn't exactly surprised. But she knew she had to find out who he was. If she didn't, no telling what might happen to the Lazy B and to all the other small ranches in the neighborhood For Wyoming in 1892 was shaken to its foundations by the war between the big cattle ranchers and the homesteaders, and now this spy in the employ of the big owners threatened to do more than just cut fences and shoot cattle.

Sophie had other troubles besides the spy. Brought up on the Wyoming prairie, she could ride a horse and rope a steer, but she could not for the life of her sew a fine seam. So. when her father brought Aunt Lydia from Connecticut to "gentle" her, Sophie was terrified of being made into a sissy. She loved the open, vigorous life of the Lazy B with all her heart, and she determined not to let anything take her away from it neither Aunt Lydia's desire to make her into a polite young lady, nor the spy's increasing threats.

How Sophie and her friend Zed discovered the spy's identity and chased him across the prairie at the very moment the cattle war was coming to a pitched battle is a thrilling climax to Sophie's adventures. And in the course of it she found out at last how she could become "gentle" without being a sissy.

Here is a grand combination of humor, unforgettable characters and breath-taking plot. Wyoming is Mrs. Richardson's own country, and she has dug deep into its history for brand new material. Into Sophie's story she has woven all the rich excitement of real frontier life.
