In 1858 Ned Adams, a young Colonial lad, found himself apprenticed to an innkeeper near London, with little hope for return to his native America. Captured in Boston, Ned had been forced to serve as a cabin boy on a pirate ship bound for England. After his desperate escape from the villainous crew, Ned realized that it would take him years to save enough money to buy passage home. Then, through a stroke of luck, Gen. Jeffery Amherst stopped at the inn, and, impressed by the lad's honesty, bought his freedom. But even better fortune was the news that the young General was bound for the New World to lead the daring British attack on the great French Fortress of Louisburgh that guarded the St. Lawrence.

Through the story of this adventurous lad, the author re-creates a tense struggle right out of history—a struggle that was vital to the future of both Canada and America. Grim battles on swampy territory, naval skirmishes that left ships blazing in the harbor make thrilling reading in this realistic tale that is a tribute to the General whose courage and strategy triumphed over almost impossible odds.
