My whole family, murdered by the Susquehannocks. By Naokan, who had sworn to be my brother. "Naokan, hear me!" I shouted. "I am now your enemy!"
Determined to avenge his family's deaths, fourteen-year-old Robert Bradford joins a volunteer army of plantation owners that has been organized by colonist Nathaniel Bacon to protect Virginia from Indian attacks. Robert's hatred for Naokan dissolves when he learns that Naokan had tried to stop the massacre, but by then Naokan is Bacon's prisoner. Robert puts his own life in jeopardy by plotting Naokan's escape while pretending to go along with Bacon's plans for the colonists to sever ties with England and rule themselves.
A startling look at an event about which little has been written, this novel brings to life the 1676 Bacon Rebellion, which is now known as "the dress rehearsal for the American Revolution." Award-winning author Madge Harrah captures the events and the spirit of the times with flair and authenticity.
