From the dust jacket
The text of this volume was first published in Harper's Weekly in 1898 as a work of fiction. It impressed so many readers that it passed from literature into folklore, where both its text and origins evolved with each telling and reprinting. We at Blue Lantern Books were taken in by a privately printed version which represented the will as genuine, and the author as a dying pauper.
Hence, in our first three printings of this text, we perpetuated these myths. However, descendants of Mr. Fish, the actual author, have since informed us of the truth.
Origins aside, we continue to find this "will" impressive.
