Old Hat New Hat

Old Hat New Hat

by Stan Berenstain, Jan Berenstain
Publisher: Random House
Board Book, 20 pages
Price: $5.99

Our first foray into the Berenstain Bears, this small board book tells the story of going to the hat store to buy a new hat. Besides delighting in the rhyming text, young children will learn about adjectives ("Too fancy / too frilly / too shiny / too silly") as well as a lesson in contentment: when all is said and done, it is the old hat that is "just right!"

My favorite part of this book has always been the last three page. After all the fuss of looking over numerous hats, the bears puts his old one on and says, "Just right," over and over again. With how our culture tells us to never be satisfied with what we have, this has always been a refreshing book. Plus the pictures of the silly hats are amusing. Yes, I am an adult, and yes, I like this book.
