The Porters are a typical American family, and this is the story of their very eventful summer holiday on Osprey Island, off the New England coast. The story centers around ten-year-old Charlie Porter (whose actions are as unpredictable as the Maine climate) and Mrs. Wappinger, who is an eccentric and delightful old lady (and who can make the best doughnuts in New England). Charlie and Mrs. Wappinger decide to dig for buried treasure, and their digging operations become the despair of everyone else on Osprey Island, including Charlie's long-suffering mother and father. After many days of digging, even Charlie himself has doubts about the existence of the treasure they are seeking— until an accident proves that their efforts are not in vain. . .
Mrs Wappinger's Secret is a warm-hearted and very funny story, and when they read it, young people will find that they have made two good friends in Charlie Porter and Mrs. Wappinger herself.
