From the publisher:

In 1716, when Massachusetts built the first lighthouse in America at the entrance to Boston Harbor, there were only 70 lighthouses in the whole world.  Since that time, the story of the building of lighthouses has been that of an extraordinary feat of engineering when again and again the builders saw their careful work destroyed by wind and sea.  The reason for building them was to prevent tragedy of hazardous reefs and shoals.  Since the construction of the first ones, some have been rebuilt many times.  The U.S. Coast Guard now supervises approximately 40,000 navigational aids, including lighthouses, automatic lights, and buoys.  Some of the most famous lighthouses are illustrated here in beautiful watercolor drawings.
