A former architect turned water color artist, Maslen was hired by his wife to redo some illustrations for her books. He also took on the marketing and publishing side of the family business. Perhaps, little did he realize how successful the early readers were going to be. Maslen's five sets of Bob Books
have become almost a staple tool for children just learning to read. These books are sold in many outlets nationwide, and they are available all over the world. Now Maslen lets Scholastic, Inc. market and publish the books, and his eldest daughter manages the family business while he concentrates on his artwork. Several of his paintings can be seen at the Portland Art Museum.
