High and long,
Thick and strong,
Wide and stark,
Was the ark.

Noah's Ark opens with a magnificent endpaper depicting Noah peacefully tending his vineyard while behind him cities burn, armies march, and dead bodies lay strewn on the ground. Below him is the inscription "But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord." Thus begins this elegant, detailed, lightly humorous picture book. Really more of a graphic novel than a strict picture book, the first page begins with an old poem by Jacobus Revius that Peter Spier translated for this book.

The watercolor illustrations are incredibly detailed, portraying the bustle and busyness of the whole affair of getting two of every species on a wooden ark and caring for them during the flood. Spier's illustrations contain a gentle humor that carries the story. He makes great use of space, knowing when to fill up a scene and when to leave large sections empty, to excellent effect. The gorgeous and humorous retelling of the classic Bible story deserves a place on every child's bookshelf.

Lauren Shearer writes words for fun and profit. She also makes films, but everyone knows you can't make a profit doing that. Her other hobby is consistently volunteering way too much of her time. You can read more of her reviews here.
