Gnats of Knotty Pine

Gnats of Knotty Pine

by Bill Peet
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin
Trade Paperback, 46 pages
Price: $9.99

It's hunting season again, and the worried animals of Knotty Pine are gathered to discuss strategies for frustrating the hunters. The discussion is going nowhere, but larger animals refuse to listen to the gnats' suggestions. However, they learn to appreciate the tiny bugs the next day, when they're able to make the hunters "buzz off."

Some people might be offended by the politically-correct rendition of the hunters (they look like rednecks with guns) and the anti-hunting message. But this one has enough humor to make the book worth reading anyway. The squirrel's dream of taunting the hunters with their own gun, and the gnats' "V" for victory at the end are both hilarious.
