From the book:

THESE fifty Christmas carols, mostly for mixed voices, have been chosen and arranged with carol concerts and carol services in mind.

Many of the carols are from traditional sources and include a number of well-loved tunes either newly arranged by the present Editors or in settings by other distinguished musicians both past and present. A little more than half are for unaccompanied singing, the remainder having accompaniments for piano or organ and incorporating varied harmonizations and descants.

. . . .

Carols for Choirs is a comprehensive and varied collection, and it is hoped that by using it choirs will be able to perform their Christmas concerts and services without the inconvenience of handling a number of separate leaflets and books.

Note on the NINE LESSONS

The service of Nine Lessons with Carols was first drawn up by Archbishop Benson when Bishop of Truro for use in that Cathedral and was later simplified and modified for use in King's College Chapel, Cambridge, in 1918 by its then Dean, the Very Reverend Eric Milner-White, to whom also we owe the Bidding Prayer.
