Christmas coming! Christmas coming! The words sang in ten-year-old Becky's mind through all the wintry days of preparation on the farm.

There was so much to be done: spicy fruit cakes and gingerbread ornaments to be made with the whole family helping; knitting and weaving to be finished; all the presents to be made except the ones for the stockings; spruce boughs and ground pine to be gathered in the woods and made into wreaths; the beautiful little crèche to be set up in the ancient unused brick oven—just hundreds of fascinating things to be accomplished before the Day of Days. All these exciting things had to be fitted in between chores and school, which luckily would soon be recessed for the holidays.

But most exciting of all to Becky were the whispers and the consultations going on almost, but not quite, out of earshot. It was clear that father and the boys were planning a surprise for her, with Mother and Kitty helping. And Becky could hardly wait for them to see the surprises she was preparing for them.

Every little girl will share Becky's breathless delight when her surprise finally comes, and will agree with her that she couldn't possibly have had a more wonderful Christmas!
