The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

Almena Brown is the daughter in a Black family who live in New York. Her father works for a wealthy Long Island stable and kennel man, her mother is a nurse, and while Almena loves dogs and wants to be a veterinarian, they are forbidden by lease to have pets in the apartment. As the story goes, following Almena's adventures during summer and the sixth grade school year, she starts caring for other people's dogs and is rewarded at last when her father's job will take them permanently to the kennels in the country. Though episodic in parts, this is a warm story of a girl making the best of things.

Please note that most used copies we get do not include the dust jackets, and will often look like the cloth cover to the left.
