How To Use This Notebook
"...The inability to find pleasure in great art is all the more reason to study it, not to be excused from art class."
David Hicks, NORMS & NOBILITY
This Western Cultural History Notebook is designed to help Challenge II students develop the habits and disciplines necessary to cultivate knowledge, understanding, and wisdom in their study of art, music, and cultural history Among others, these habits include: close observation, studious listening, detailed now taking, thoughtful research, and candid discussion.
The Notebook should not be treated as a "workbook" Instead of providing space for easy fill in the blank answers, this Notebook should encourage students to contemplate the grammar of Art, Music, and Culture, ask good questions, have rich discussions, and document their discoveries. While a blank notebook can certainly serve this purpose, this Notebook provides a helpful structure for students just beginning their cultural studies.
Students should use the space provided (and additional pages, if necessary) to record as much of their Western Cultural History learning as possible. As students journey through Artists and their Art. Composers and their Music, How Should We Then Live? videos, class discussions, at home research, essays, presentations, and a Museum Field Trip, they should record their insights here and in their chosen Timeline format-with consistency. If used as intended, this notebook will become an invaluable resource for class discussion, essays, Rhetorical Assignments, and Blue Book exams.
