From the dust jacket:

Returning home to Chicago from their Florida vacation, the twins Lara and Barnaby are on the brink of being reunited with their mother when they suddenly find themselves thrust back into Mesmeria – the secret world they had found entry to during a scary trip into the Everglades. But now they discover, to their horror, that Mesmeria is no longer the bright, beautiful place it was when they left.

Hundreds of years have passed, and the once-familiar land is weed-grown and gloomy, its inhabitants living in fear. A friendly old dwarf named Quill reveals the awful truth: the good witch Mag Namodder and many of the twins' other friends are being held captive by the evil King Krumpp in a land of perpetual darkness. The only two things that might enable them to free the prisoners – the Secret Volumes of Warp and the Wand – are stored in a hidden chamber in Castle Thorkin, Krumpp's stronghold. Even if they can get inside that castle, somehow locate the books and the Wand, and then manage to escape with them, the odds against finally finding and rescuing the prisoners are enormous. Nevertheless, they know they must try.

A small band of rescuers is assembled the twins, Quill, three hawklike beings named Kite, Kestra and Phalco, and a tiny but very important little creature named Ergot – and with determination, the hazardous mission is undertaken.

Allan Eckert uses his own special wizardry to combine humor and suspense, loathsome and lovable creatures, and tragedy and triumph in this exciting sequel to The Dark Green Tunnel
