The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!

A deaf and dumb girl growing up in a small Spanish village finds in the church a priceless statue of the Christ Child which becomes the one thing that will not reject her affection.

*************************

Andalucía, in the southern part of Spain, is the setting Maia Wojciechowska has chosen for A Single Light. As in her earlier Newbery Award winning book, Shadow of a Bull, the background becomes an integral part of the story, almost a character itself.

The story is deceptively simple. In the poor village of Almas, a deaf-and-dumb girl finds a priceless statue in the church. How the girl and the statue change the villagers' lives is told in terms of a primary necessity of human life: the need to love.
