PLANTS AND ANIMALS LIVE TOGETHER
IF YOU LIVE on a farm, as I do, you can see how plants and animals live together. We enjoy the wild things that live on our farm. They come quite close to the house, especially in winter when it is hard for them to find food. Some times the quail come near, or the raccoon and opposum come to the spring to drink. There are squirrels, too, as well as many kinds of birds, and even foxes. They stay with us because we give them shelter in thickets and fence rows and put out food for them. It is easy for us to do, and these wild creatures bring many rewards, which this book tells you about. The birds not only sing for us, but they eat all sorts of injurious insects. The birds, in their way, protect us.
As you grow older, you will understand how wonderful are the trees, the wild flowers, and the wild animals. Perhaps you do already. There is no greater fun in life than in knowing the wild things and being friends with them.
