Between 1790 and 1830, hundreds of Americans moved into the rugged hills and narrow hollers of what became West Virginia. There were no supermarkets, factories, or cars, and so pioneer families made almost everything they needed to survive. This book re-creates the life-style of the fictional Davis family. The scenes were photographed at Fort New Salem, a living history museum celebrating the folkways of Appalachia.
