If you've ever played Pentago you know how much fun a few plastic trays and colored marbles can be. MultiPlayer Pentago ratchets the craziness to double, increasing the trays from four to nine, and the amount of colors from two to four.

Each tray still has nine divots, and the goal is still to get five pieces in a row, but with up to 4 players things can get pretty nuts. The rules are the same—every turn, you place a marble (or disc, in this case) anywhere on any tile, and rotate one tile 90 degrees. The first with five in a row wins. A lot of games are deceptively simple, this one is just deceptive.

Not only do you have to take into account the positions of everyone else's pieces and keep them from getting five in a row, you have to figure out how to place your own pieces so that turning tiles will put them where you want them. It gets a bit frustrating, like tic-tac-tow gone horribly awry and morphed into a monstrous version of itself.

But Pentago Multi Player is waaaaay more fun than tic-tac-toe, and faaaaar more challenging. It's one of the best multiplayer abstract games we've seen, in fact. Because it's so easy to learn and simple to play, it makes a great repeat game, getting better with each rematch as players hone their skills and improve their strategy.

C. Hollis Crossman used to be a child. Now he is a husband and father, teaches adult Sunday school in his Presbyterian congregation, and likes weird stuff. He might be a mythical creature, but he's definitely not a centaur. Read more of his reviews here.
