Thornton W. Burgess said that imagination was "the birthright of every child." His Old Mother West Wind stories, first published in 1910, have worked their magic on generations of children. The simple, pastoral stories and the mischievous characters who inhabit Burgess's woodlands—Peter Rabbit, Sammy Jay, Tommy Trout, the Merry Little Breezes are part of an American childhood.

Michael Hague now turns his talents to illustrating these classic tales. It's a perfect match: Hague's gift, like Burgess's, is for bringing animal characters effortlessly to life. This new, full-color edition of Old Mother West Wind will introduce Burgess's stories to contemporary children while it encourages their imaginations to soar.

from the dust jacket

Thornton Burgess was born in 1874 in Sandwich, Massachusetts. While growing up he frequently roamed the fields, woods, and salt marshes of Cape Cod, where he came to know the birds, animals, and plant life well. Later, as a grown man, he told stories about the animals and wildlife he knew and loved to his young son. These stories were first collected in Old Mother West Wind. The volume was the first of over seventy books for Mr. Burgess. His characters—Peter Rabbit, Reddy Fox, Sammy Jay, Happy Jack Squirrel, Johnny Chuck, Jimmy Skunk, and more—are well known to Burgess fans around the world.
