"This sumptuous volume contains 120 of the most famous Indians in American history, reproduced in full color as they were painted more than 150 years ago by some of the country's famed artists. These are the same portraits published by Crown several years ago in the McKenney-Hall Portrait Gallery of American Indians and priced at $25.00.

These portraits were first published in three portfolios in 1836 by Colonel Thomas Loraine McKenney, Indian Superintendent under Presidents Madison, Monroe, Adams, and Jackson. Extremely rare, the portfolios now command thousands of dollars and the prices for individual prints are soaring. The original portraits were a major attraction at the Smithsonian Institution until they were destroyed by fire in 1865.

This low-priced edition will bring the portraits to a vast new audience of historians, artists, collectors, and anyone concerned with the pace of the American Indian in our history."
