MCP Spelling Workout

These books provide for the integration of spelling with reading and writing. In books A - F, students read spelling words in a variety of expository selections and genre, including poetry, riddles and stories. These provide opportunities for reading across the curriculum, focusing on other subject areas. Books G and H drop the reading to focus on writing.

After students read the selection and practice writing their spelling words, they use List Words to help them write about a related topic in a variety of forms. A proofreading exercise is also provided for each lesson to help students apply the writing process to their own writings and reinforce the use of spelling words in context.

These books are phonetic based, and correlate closely with the MCP "Plaid" Phonics, although both series stand alone. They use the test-study-test method, meaning students take a pretest of words that have not been introduced already, then correct them under the direction of the teacher. This is a chance to see which words the student already knows, but also an opportunity to analyze spelling patterns. The student then studies the words and takes a final test.

Included in each book are word puzzles and games, as well as a small dictionary in the back.
