MARIANNA MAYER, author, illustrator, and designer, has published more than ninety books. Even as a youngster, she loved telling stories, painting pictures, and composing music. An only child for nearly ten years, her first audience was her dog, Tony, her constant companion. She first decided to write a book at the age of nine, and she published her first children's book ten years later, when she was nineteen. At school she took art history as her major, and studied classical piano for many years before devoting herself solely to writing and painting.
Many of Mayer's adaptations of classic fairy tales, folktales, and myth are perennial bestsellers, including Beauty and the Beast, The Twelve Dancing Princesses, and Baba Yaga and Vasilisa the Brave. Her original Unicorn and the Lake has garnered many Children's Choice awards, and continues to be beloved by children and adults.
MICHAEL HAGUE has illustrated a number of classic children's tales, including The Hobbit, The Velveteen Rabbit, The Wizard of Oz, and The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Some of his other books include The Book of Dragons, The Book of Pirates, The Book of Fairies, Alphabears, and Good Night, Fairies.
Hague was born in Los Angeles in 1948. While he was growing up, his mother nurtured his artistic talent and love of books. He graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, and now lives in a pink house in Colorado, with one cat, three large dogs, and a car that drives in the snow.
