Growing up in the region we now call Spain, Juan Ponce de Leon wanted to explore the "New World." After becoming a skilled soldier, he joined Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the Americas. He is best known for his exploration of Florida and the Caribbean, where he sought to discover the legendary Fountain of Youth, a spring whose waters were said to have the power to restore youth.
