The books in this section are usually hardcover and in decent shape, though we'll sometimes offer hard-to-find books in lesser condition at a reduced price. Though we often put images of the book with their original dust jackets, the copies here won't always (or even often) have them. If that is important to you, please call ahead or say so in the order comments!
Bright blue cloth hardcover. Dust jacket not present but book flap with summary included inside the book. Corners rubbed and endpapers and text block edges have some staining, but text is clean and binding sound.
From the dust jacket:
Here is a dog story to delight readers of all ages. The background is fresh and original: the field trials of the hunting dogs in Virginia. The story itself is full of incident and suspense. And MORGAN DENNIS has illustrated it as only he can do.
Gypsy Lad was the runt of the litter, but the pride and joy of nine-year-old Cora Lee Henderson. He came of the blood royal of English setterdom; bird sense was born in him. The competition was keen between Cora Lee and Rodney Evans over their rival dogs – Cora's Lad, and Rodney's big pointer. Rodney's father, Hugh Evans was master of the beautiful Virginia plantation, Rosemount, and a neighbor of Charley Henderson, the veteran trainer of setters.
But it is primarily Lad's book: Lad saving Cora Lee from the charging bull, Lad defending Evelyn the cat and her kitten from the pointer – above all, Lad in the preliminary field trials and later winning the national championship at Grand Junction, Tennessee. One of Lad's heroic acts nearly cost him his life, but the setter staged a marvelous comeback and the book ends with Cora Lee and Rodney forgetting their rivalry in admiration of his greatest victory.
