'Time does not smother his memory. For the story of El Cid is without ending in the history of Spain.'

This is the story of Don Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, chief marshal of the royal army, who was exiled from his native Castile by the weak King Alfonso in 1089. Banished from his two little daughters and his lovely wife, he rode out of Castile at midnight, between the teeth of a wild and snarling mountain range, and journeyed into the South, where Moorish invaders had ruled for centuries.

Throughout his many adventures Don Rodrigo retained a basic sense of honour and courtesy to all men. He fused both black and white into his army, and was eventually given the name of El Cid—the Lord.

This is the first version of El Cid for children and it has been retold in a vivid and poetic style by the award-winning author, Geraldine McCaughrean. She is joined again by the distinguished artist, Victor Ambrus, with whom she worked on the very successful Canterbury Tales.

He has brought this great epic to life with scenes of high adventure and romance, set amongst the castles and landscape of medieval Spain. Together they have created a book that will stir the imagination of children everywhere.
