As a young girl, Cynthia Rylant wrote about what she knew. Small town, spelling bees, boys, running over a dog, the shopkeeper who kept a pet monkey. Her poems are honest, relating in plain, unadorned language the reflections of a young teenage girl. Her poems show us the life and emotions of someone going through the joy and pain we all go through. It’s a work of beautiful understatement, human and relatable, full of wide eyed wonder at the way life unfolds. Accompanied by the soft pencil drawings of Stephen Gammell, this is a childhood portrait that will touch a chord with all who read it.
